It’s not everyday we get to write about new trails being proposed. It seems as if every plan that crosses our path closes routes to motorized users. We were excited to learn that the BLM in central Idaho is proposing new motorized trails for the Challis Foothills Trails Master Plan. The Bureau of Land Management in the Challis Field Office recognizes that the outdoor recreation economy is crucial to local communities. Comments will be accepted through October 12, 2023. There are currently many user created routes, in order to manage these routes the BLM understands there is clearly a need and demand for more recreation opportunities in this area. “A lack of current mountain biking infrastructure and increasing popularity of single-track trail necessitate action to meet public need and address resource protection concerns”
This proposal includes the following:
4.5 miles of new bike and ebike trails
Designate 15.2 miles of routes for ebikes and bikes
2.5 miles of motorized singletrack routes
7.7 acres bike and ebike skills course
Only Class I e-bikes would be permitted on the bike routes and skills course, however, this is a step in the right direction. Send a comment to the BLM letting them know you support opening and creating new routes for motorized users.
